TENURE TRACK POSITION IN RHETORIC

The Communication Studies Department at San Francisco State  anticipates hiring, subject to financial ability, a tenure-track faculty member  at the Assistant Professor level, effective fall 2012, in the field of Rhetoric. The candidate we seek will teach undergraduate and  graduate courses in rhetorical theory and methods. The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of a program of scholarly research in one or more of the following areas: classical rhetoric, the rhetoric of ethnic  or racial communities, feminist criticism, political rhetoric, public address, critical rhetoric, cultural rhetoric, labor rhetoric, the rhetoric of resistance, or social activism.

Qualifications and Duties: PhD or equivalent, and in the former case will have completed all doctoral requirements by August 1, 2012. A typical teaching load is five 3-unit courses per year (2-3 or 3-2).    The  successful candidate must be qualified to teach COMM 341,    “Rhetorical  Theory,” and COMM 662, “Communication Criticism.” The Department  also  welcomes the development of a graduate course in rhetorical  criticism.    Additional duties include scholarly research and/or creative  activities; curriculum development; supervising master’s    theses/creative work projects/culminating examinations; advising at    the    undergraduate and graduate levels; and department, campus, and  community service. The University provides opportunities for support    of    both scholarly research and creative activities. SFSU is especially    interested in candidates whose teaching and research interests    include    attention to the issues of social justice and diversity, and we welcome applications from scholars who address issues of race and ethnicity in rhetoric.

Rank and Salary: Appointment will be at the rank of Assistant    Professor. The salary will be competitive, commensurate with qualifications. Department: The Communication Studies Department is committed to the    study of human communication in various contexts in such a way as to contribute to a more humane world. We examine how people express themselves verbally and nonverbally, how people listen to others, and how symbols relate to human behavior. We acknowledge, appreciate, and integrate human diversity in its various forms. We study human communication in culturally and socially diverse contexts, using a  variety of methods and technologies to discover and share knowledge  about communication, and to analyze, interpret, and perform    discourse.  Areas of study include advocacy, face-to-face interaction, group process, intercultural, organizational, rhetoric, and political  communication, and performance of literature and oral traditions.  The Department awards both the B.A. degree and the M.A. degree, as well as a minor.
